A national gathering of all the parts of the maker movement to spark increased connections, generate robust collaborations, and promote the growth of an inclusive maker community. Central to the goal of the event is to promote relationship-building across lines of regular conversation and generate an increased sense of connected community throughout the entire ecosystem of maker-supporting entities.
Project Lead for the team organizing the CS for All Summit in St. Louis, dedicated to amplifying the work of stakeholders nationwide engaged in building K-12 computer science education for all US students, both in and out of school. The Summit, happing October 16th and 17th 2017, will include both an online and in-person audience of school district delegations, commitment-makers, and community leaders.

On the organizing team for this full-scale innovation and festival event, working specifically to bring a dozen hands-on experiences featuring numerous makers. Additionally, set up and supported the creation of the iconic SXSL sign by Adam Savage, which changed colors based on social media interactions during the event.

Co-led the President’s Kid Science Advisors Campaign, which generated submissions from thousands of students from across the country and served as a leading example for creating more youth voice in science and technology. Coordinated an in-person meeting of a selected group of kid science advisors with the President, his Science Advisor Dr. John Holdren, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, NSF Director France Cordova, and astronauts Mark and Scott Kelly. Convened Federal agencies and supported local youth-advisory organizations in order to initiate the development of new plans to elevate and engage in youth voice.

Supported a community strategic design process through a deliberate series of White House convenings and regular whole-group conference calls, working groups, tiger teams, one-on-one conversations, and email, all of which resulted in the creation of a stand-alone Nation of Makers nonprofit launched in November 2016 with support from more than 300 organizations and representatives from all 50 states.

Launched the DHF Center of Excellence for Innovation in Technology Education to train educators from around the country how to incorporate making into their own learning environments. Grew team and program from inception to implementation benefiting hundreds of teachers across a dozen states through a variety of workshops, trainings, and online resources.

Built and led a team committed to fostering learning, creativity, productivity, and community through education. Transformed the closed-down South Baltimore Rec Center into a vibrant Tech Center for youth, growing programs from 25 youth to more than 2,000. Built the organization from an idea to becoming nationally recognized as a leader in maker education within three years.

Led efforts and officially chartered and convened the first ever Maker Interagency Working Group under the Committee on Technology of the National Science Technology Council. Initially co-chaired by myself, Susannah Fox (Chief Technology Office at U.S. Health and Human Services), and Johan Uvin (Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Education), the group of more than 30 different Federal agencies and departments continues to meet with new co-chairs Jenn Gustetic (NASA) and Craig Buerstatte (EDA) and build on the community of practice among Federal government employees to identify promising practices and methods to build support for collaborative maker projects both inside the Federal agencies and departments and through public-private initiatives.
Creating the strategic plan for translation the mission and vision of Bmore STEM into direct action. Includes engagement plan to convene and work with the existing leadership team, build an advisory group, and develop funding and sustainability strategy.
